  19. The Router Requirements Working Group has the goal of rewriting
  20. the existing Router Requirements RFC, RFC-1009, and a) bringing
  21. it up to the organizational and requirement explicitness levels
  22. of the Host Requirements RFC's, as well as b) including
  23. references to more recent work, such as OSPF and BGP.
  24.  
  25. The Working Group will also instigate, review, or (if appropriate)
  26. produce additional RFCs on related topics.  To date, Group members have
  27. produced draft documents discussing the operation of routers which are in
  28. multiple routing domains (3 papers), TOS, and a routing table MIB.
  29.  
  30. The purposes of this project include:
  31.  
  32. - Defining what an IP router does in sufficient detail that
  33.   routers from different vendors are truly interoperable.
  34.  
  35. - Providing guidance to vendors, implementors, and purchasers of
  36.   IP routers.
  37.  
  38. The Working Group has decided that, unlike RFC-1009, the Router Requirements
  39. document should not discuss Link Layer protocols or address resolution.
  40. Instead, those topics should be covered in a separate Link Layer Requirements
  41. document, applicable to hosts as well as routers.  Whether this Group will
  42. create the Link Layer Requirements is still to be determined.
